MY EXPERIENCE

Background & Expertise

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Jan 2017-Present

My research project is an NSF funded project titled as "Development and Validation of a Resilience-based Seismic Design Methodology for Tall Wood Buildings." This project is collaborative research between the University of Nevada Reno, the Colorado School of Mine, the University of Washington, the Washington State University, the Colorado State University, and Lehigh University. The purpose of this project is to develop a seismic design method for tall wood buildings that incorporates high-performance structural and non-structural systems. The proposed method will accurately quantify building resilience. As part of this project, I am specifically working on identifying suitable detail for connecting the non-structural systems to a structural system called the Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). The non-structural systems include non-load-bearing walls, exterior curtain wall systems, vertical piping for water supply and fire sprinklers. In addition, I analyze the contribution of non-structural systems to the stiffness and strength of the structural system and advance the existing fragility models that connect functionality to seismic demands and resilience performance targets. In order to achieve these goals, I use various computerized simulation software packages including OpenSEES and tests to be conducted at NHERI@Lehigh facility. Finally, I will test the optimized model and configuration using an outdoor shake table in a full-scale 10-story CLT building, NHERI@UCSD.
